I meant to do it ages ago and totally forgot! Foldables are a great way to pull away from traditional worksheets and create new and engaging opportunities for students to show their understanding. We use them often in my classroom to show sequence in both Social Studies or Language Arts. Below you can see how by simply taking a single piece of construction paper, you can fold it into a booklet that when pulled reveals so much more!<br />
<br />
This example below is from my Farm to Table unit on TPT. Students read about how eggs travel from from the farm to the table! They then sort the different events in the process in order from beginning to end! I provide each student with a 9x12 construction paper that I've sliced in half and folded into sixths. They then overlap and glue two of the sections together to create a little booklet.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this unit, students glue the different steps in the process to the booklet and number them from beginning to end. Sometimes, I use it as a way for students to explore text. They highlight the different steps in the passage and then can refer back to the passage when working on their foldable. Other times, I use it as the end assessment to see if students have understood our week long study on eggs! Below you can see what a finished product might look like! For students who struggle with the foldable or when I run out of time as all teachers do, I will also sequence stories or content like the example in the bottom of the picture! Students can still enjoy the process of sorting the steps in sequence in a way in a way that allows for them to see the finished process in front of them. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love how foldables can make the material come alive in a very hands on way!</div>

We've been attempting to dig deep, expand our students' comprehension, and make stronger connections between varying levels and genres of text.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Teacher Model</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One of the anchor texts that second grade focused on this year was "Flat Stanley's Original Adventure" by Jeff Brown. Now there are many people who absolutely love this book! I am not typically one of them. I, overall, find the themes in it to be a tad boring and lacking in depth. However, I still read it every single year. What it lacks in depth, it makes up for in its ability to inspire struggling readers to pick up a brand new series with confidence.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR9vGy6KUnVpD6q2jcka0Z8Ucjk43iYfmLgnXTOC9kgsc-xBzmM_cvDIP-0QJ1CVfbZJpxf8YBQpa0tDEdExFpeHw5wkUxb9NEoyOQHw1xUG60HD53LOHC5FbT58hLZyFQ5hvDfKzq1tk/s1600/fullsizeoutput_26da.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR9vGy6KUnVpD6q2jcka0Z8Ucjk43iYfmLgnXTOC9kgsc-xBzmM_cvDIP-0QJ1CVfbZJpxf8YBQpa0tDEdExFpeHw5wkUxb9NEoyOQHw1xUG60HD53LOHC5FbT58hLZyFQ5hvDfKzq1tk/s200/fullsizeoutput_26da.jpeg" width="150" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Student example</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This was the first year however, that I did not read the story in passing, but rather delved deeper into it. We compared Stanley's experience of being shipped to that of the title characher, May, in the book, "Mailing May" by Michael O. Tunnel. We looked at how our world is geographically laid out. We practiced understanding and creating maps of our own, while reading, "Me on a Map" by Joan Sweeney and "Mapping Penny's World" by Loreen Leedy. Also, we reflected on Stanley's kindness to those around him, and discussed how everyone in the world deserves to be teated with such kindness, regardless of their differences. We then used it as opportunity to think about some of the other places in the world Stanley might visit througout the remaining books in the series.<br />
<br />
It was remarkable to me that when a simple story was paired properly with other texts, it suddenly became exceptionally more meaningfully. You can see what I mean by looking at the projects below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuhy6zlYNAf_Ukw1dN_sCIJEAL8L79zdoASglNzD8-vki2PF9-fcYmklmFRU18QuNPlR6cfwzbWOacl13upDx-jwkmHn004tRZbiZC51yXApMhQIzMWQGLjQqUHK4lVEILCJOoTcTJ4E4/s1600/fullsizeoutput_26e4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuhy6zlYNAf_Ukw1dN_sCIJEAL8L79zdoASglNzD8-vki2PF9-fcYmklmFRU18QuNPlR6cfwzbWOacl13upDx-jwkmHn004tRZbiZC51yXApMhQIzMWQGLjQqUHK4lVEILCJOoTcTJ4E4/s640/fullsizeoutput_26e4.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We ended our text set by applying what we'd learned and had been working on into a summative project. As you probably noticed, my Flat Stanley project is a bit different than the typical Flat Stanley project that you might have seen on Pinterest. We didn't send anything in the mail, nor did we connect with other classrooms around the country. <br />
<br />
Instead, students went to the school library and picked out a nonfiction book in their reading range about a place of their choosing. They used nonfiction text features to explore the book, and they read to find the main idea in each paragraph. Finally, they wrote a postcard, pretending that their flat-selves were visiting that particular location. The students compiled an image they drew of their flat-selves, interesting facts, and the front and back of postcards into a fun collage that they later presented to the class.<br />
<br />
We called it the Flat Second Grader Project! I love how they turned out! I definitely enjoyed my first experience with anchor texts!<br />

Recently on Instagram, I posted one of my new favorite projects for the month of October, Monster Movies!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPccJPXWGvKRCnX7xsWzbNypHAR1ktzDq7kCKvkqzOVIrr3RZ4wmItjRsk_gBYz0Oa3a0qrStpEEswZWOJXKCiQ6JiGg4NjPC16cQ0KnIdOyICPedivcotAjgjaBCQ5r6rwZrwn_Uydd8/s1600/IMG_8713.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPccJPXWGvKRCnX7xsWzbNypHAR1ktzDq7kCKvkqzOVIrr3RZ4wmItjRsk_gBYz0Oa3a0qrStpEEswZWOJXKCiQ6JiGg4NjPC16cQ0KnIdOyICPedivcotAjgjaBCQ5r6rwZrwn_Uydd8/s320/IMG_8713.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last year, I had my students create monster videos, using the app Chatterpix. At the time, my students were struggling with character traits, and chatterpix lended itself perfectly to helping my students create monsters with clear and specific character traits. However, this year's class is struggling more with basic story plot, specifically with understanding the difference between beginning, middle and end. So as any teacher would do, we made a new type of movie! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We used the app Stop Motion Studio to create short monster movies with a clear beginning, middle and end! Students designed their stories and created simple Story boards. They then filmed them, making sure to barely move their monsters while they took the pictures! When all was done, they presented them to the class, making sure to point out the clear Beginning, Middle and End. Here you can see a picture of how they created their monster studios!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>Spotted</b> this year in Second grade is not only a brand new class of students but a freshly made Back to School bulletin board!!! This year I went with the ladybug theme for my board. I hand cut and glued 25 ladybugs on neon pink paper and cut out a fun saying using my cricut. Although its not in this picture, each lady bug now has a student's name written in silver sharpie on the center black strip. The board is bright and extra cheerful!<br />
<br />
I also took the time to update my birthday board, create fun new labels for my student art boxes and to switch my typical AR board to a BRAG tag board! That's right! I finally jumped on board (Pun intended! lol!) with BRAG tags!<br />

<b><u>Brag Tags</u></b></h3>
My friend, Isobel, came up with an amazing way to twist Brag tags to best fit our school, so that we can keep our traditional behavior system while still offering them as positive incentives for hard work! If you've read my blog before, you'll know that my school focuses on encouraging student reading, mastery of learning material and growth mindset each year by utilizing technology and celebration! Students in the past have received stickers for books that they've read, class dance breaks for learning, and lunch with the teacher for hard work, effort and overall kindness to others.<br />
<br />
So with Isobel's amazing idea, we're taking our traditional AR boards and turning them into celebration boards, using brag tags. Students receive indivudal brag tags for reading AR books, passing levels in our differentiated software (ST MATH and LEXIA), caring for others, learning from their mistakes and extra hard work and effort! Everyone in the class at the same time will receive tags for mastering tricky material, finishing up fun projects, learning our prayers, and getting compliments from other teachers or admin! They will also be getting beads they can add to their tag necklaces for winning pod points. We'll be keeping our traditional behavior system but utilizing brag tags as a way to celebrate master and offer that extra positive incentive. I'm excited to see how it goes!<br />

This year, in addition to taping student work onto cabinets, doors, and windows, I will be utilizing two boards for student work. The first board is nearly the same from last year, except that I added those adorable pencil clips from the Dollar Spot at Target! Here you can see them holding up one of my favorite Back to School activities: "I am excited to "BEE" in Second Grade." The cute bee craft is from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bee-Happy-Writing-Craftivity-252424">Rhonda Baldacchino</a> on TPT. However, I changed the paper he's holding! </div>

I printed off some adorable <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Emoji-Clip-Art-Emoji-Smiley-Faces-Emoticons-Clipart-2269364">clipart</a> from Teachers Resource Force and had students cut out the face parts and glue them on yellow paper plates! They then had to write a sentence about Second grade during the first week. On the back of the plates they wrote reasons for those feelings. I didn't know what to expect when we started the project, but I couldn't have been more excited for how it turned out! Don't they all look so cute! </div>

I love sending my students and coworkers off on the first day of school with a cheesy but fun treat! I absolutely love making them and I really think it helps me show how truly thankful I am to get to spend a school year with them! In the past, I've sent my students home with packets of teddy grahams that say, " I am beary excited to have you in my class" but this year I sent my amazing fiancé to the store to get them and they were ALL gone! He went to four stores and finally just came home with Animals crackers! So he and I put our heads together and came up with an even cheesier tag! We added tons of animal puns to tell my students that "I'm WILD about having them in my class!"</div>

Here you can see a picture of how they turned out! You can also see the highlighters that I gave to my co-workers! We're writing our WCEA document this year and figured we could all use another highlighter! I attached cute little tags with a little blue ribbon and dropped them in their school mailboxes! And because you managed to read all the way down to bottom of this crazy long post, I've posted these tags for free in my TPT <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-Tags-2779566">store</a>! I hope you enjoy them! </div>

There is something about the end of the year that always gets me so behind with blogging! I think its the First Communion preparation, end of the year testing and constant events that keeps me buzzing around! I'm definitely going to have to do some catch up posts this summer!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOzkcng2huan9wuPBQbvSl1LY0bL5_QjdPI3LxiYmLVor5LiQTqKGaCURYBiq5hw5l-Oeyezy5EY4aoEb4oMfAXY4fb-dfHGzfah-Njb7gRxt2QvoDKwiZ3fqdb51qDcZInSoRZ1Eto1Y/s1600/Slide2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOzkcng2huan9wuPBQbvSl1LY0bL5_QjdPI3LxiYmLVor5LiQTqKGaCURYBiq5hw5l-Oeyezy5EY4aoEb4oMfAXY4fb-dfHGzfah-Njb7gRxt2QvoDKwiZ3fqdb51qDcZInSoRZ1Eto1Y/s400/Slide2.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
But for now... check out these silly cursive monsters that we created during our end off the year rotations last week! As you can see, students used cursive and symmetry to create unique monsters!<span style="text-align: center;"> </span><span style="text-align: center;">It's a great way to practice writing your name but can be used for any word! In the past we've made </span><u style="text-align: center;">Cursive Vocabulary Monsters</u><span style="text-align: center;"> and had our monsters shouting out the definitions of our words! No matter what form, my kids just love them! In case you want to try them, </span>I've listed the steps below.<br />
<br />
<u>Step 1</u>: Fold one piece of computer paper "hot dog" style in half.<br />
<br />
<u>Step 2</u>: Use a pencil to write your name as big as you can above the folded line in cursive.<br />
<br />
<u>Step 3</u>: Sharpie your name and refold the paper.<br />
<br />
<u>Step 4</u>: Take folded paper to the window and use a pencil to trace your cursive word on the back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9PSU0YFpH1OU7Zal6rKHCPAvxy8zUtN3q6Jx-FirBX8xqITB6fSQgXxwOkiZic8-9BllnztHp1HZy9owzo2cp_HF5wmPy4kN7w3ydbaaA3xc2sikuAviUQ3KuXAjVVGyFfPTUAPb01z0/s1600/Slide3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9PSU0YFpH1OU7Zal6rKHCPAvxy8zUtN3q6Jx-FirBX8xqITB6fSQgXxwOkiZic8-9BllnztHp1HZy9owzo2cp_HF5wmPy4kN7w3ydbaaA3xc2sikuAviUQ3KuXAjVVGyFfPTUAPb01z0/s320/Slide3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>Step 5</u>: Sharpie this new side, so that you have two symmetrical sides!<br />
<br />
<u>Step 6</u>: Open it up, color it and add some fun eyes and/or embellishments!<br />
<br />
There you have it! A cursive monster! Super easy and they all turn out so different. You can see the yellow monster below was written on the wrong side and still looks awesome! <span style="text-align: center;">They're just a fun way to practice those handwriting skills, and keep the creative juices flowing as the year winds down! :)</span><br />

<br />
Each year around Christmas time, my little Second graders begin begging me to learn multiplication!<br />
<br />
It's funny to me... but Multiplication to them is seen as this big scary topic that makes you a Third grader. Because they're so excited to learn and challenge themselves, I love giving them an introduction to multiplication. It likewise allows me to continue challenging my higher performing students throughout the year in small groups, while giving my other students who are still struggling with 3 digit addition and subtraction a little taste of third grade confidence. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpyNG2eJJCC5gql1_W8Q3XEM-1x7mCs91VRmPhB_0fpXti2ZzUEB9Ia7KdOdnZWm8sINfaIxZXZLHQQiPKOHDyKI0J4Dxt5vpAcUrZKO_FJ4aEOyzHdwyII7BpzkFS8l2JUBoiDPJx7s0/s1600/IMG_6203.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpyNG2eJJCC5gql1_W8Q3XEM-1x7mCs91VRmPhB_0fpXti2ZzUEB9Ia7KdOdnZWm8sINfaIxZXZLHQQiPKOHDyKI0J4Dxt5vpAcUrZKO_FJ4aEOyzHdwyII7BpzkFS8l2JUBoiDPJx7s0/s200/IMG_6203.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
I always start my very first day with multiplication by using m&m's. Using Candy as a manipulative for Math makes the lesson seem more exciting! And because I rarely use food in the classroom, it makes it special too!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This year because I have five students who are allergic to nuts, I also used skittles!<br />
<br />
Students use the m&m's and skittles to create "groups of". They write down the mutliplication problems that coincide with the candy they created. We slowly learn that multiplication is equal groups and that there is a relationship between multiplication facts with the same numbers. For example, 3 groups of 5 and 5 groups of 3 equal the same amount of candy pieces. Here you can see a picture of one of my student's work stations.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFAc-HAmsJcmXOa2iC3RTIwRyWKZrtXDwlS-cb74c-AY_O3L-6m304BXulbAgINeqIpkikLxgESJl4l_Gh03y5aMoFE_FTP8XqIW1gb_nPa3AFvSk-Y1-DdYYcWr-ox5_Q8UTNoXXiEvk/s1600/IMG_6199.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFAc-HAmsJcmXOa2iC3RTIwRyWKZrtXDwlS-cb74c-AY_O3L-6m304BXulbAgINeqIpkikLxgESJl4l_Gh03y5aMoFE_FTP8XqIW1gb_nPa3AFvSk-Y1-DdYYcWr-ox5_Q8UTNoXXiEvk/s320/IMG_6199.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Students tend to catch on extremely quickly when multiplication is presented this way. I lead them through about 6 or 7 problems together and then let them play around with the candy, making their own math problems! The discovery aspect helps solidify their learning. They write the ones they find on the white board in front of the classroom and we clap for all the awesome work they've discovered at the end of class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQuE5g4Xz32yn5_blY3WdwAaOaTWMSlr4rU0s4zWOvUSA9OXgBlytLEmnG4992h0wmnEsLLmOP7Usook1gZ7RO2LVZnoO8_1Yzizw8C43GgRisnT5s3_4WlOhApChcBL4uz0Zta013gVQ/s1600/IMG_6205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQuE5g4Xz32yn5_blY3WdwAaOaTWMSlr4rU0s4zWOvUSA9OXgBlytLEmnG4992h0wmnEsLLmOP7Usook1gZ7RO2LVZnoO8_1Yzizw8C43GgRisnT5s3_4WlOhApChcBL4uz0Zta013gVQ/s400/IMG_6205.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The next day, we use colorful beads and our fun whiteboards to continue discovering multiplication. I found these amazing ping pong boards in the "dollar spot" at Target one day and used them for fun paddle white boards. Again I lead them through a few problems, making sure to introduce them to the multiplication rules of 0 and 1. I then again let them explore.<br />

As I sit curled up on the couch with my family, I wanted to send out a short post wishing everyone out there in the blog world, a very Merry Christmas! I hope that everyone is enjoying a wonderful and relaxing Holiday!<br />

Here you can see the adorable Christmas plates that my students created for their parent gifts! We used cheap plates from the dollar store and my collection of colored sharpies. I created a simple directed drawing for them to follow and my aide and I baked them in the oven for 30 minutes at 450 degrees! I hope that my students' parents enjoyed unwrapping them this morning, as much as we enjoyed creating them!<br />

I've found some incredible resources for teaching nonfiction and I love using all of them, BUT one of my favorite ways to START teaching nonfiction is to simply let them explore and discover it on their own!<br />
<br />
I do this by splitting my students into research groups. I lay out numbered folders on a table and let each group choose a folder! I ahead of time prepare the folders to contain a set of questions, pictures, a project rubric, a map of the US and a nonfiction book about a Native American tribe. It may sound complicated but I've been compiling stuff for a few years and just have it saved as a pdf on my computer to print and throw in the folders now. It makes it way easier! lol<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdCNorjpNkR8-rzftGtNbZlvB6IpBRfg2cypzA0O9OnDrQ95uMn9wnPcbt0ZlnTPtiCtKP-7_EtZxlCcqCbGHB998U-yPn0jsrt5J7LHD-ii6KzDhx6BlKiItnfIKrMRDuuCkaf-wOK2s/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdCNorjpNkR8-rzftGtNbZlvB6IpBRfg2cypzA0O9OnDrQ95uMn9wnPcbt0ZlnTPtiCtKP-7_EtZxlCcqCbGHB998U-yPn0jsrt5J7LHD-ii6KzDhx6BlKiItnfIKrMRDuuCkaf-wOK2s/s400/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The questions directly relate to the nonfiction book each group has in their folder. If you haven't discovered "True Books!" yet, then boy have you been missing out! I first found them at my local public library, but have since slowly been purchasing them used on Amazon.<br />
<br />
Each group's goal is to find the answers to their questions somewhere within their nonfiction book and to then create a presentation and a poster about what they've learned! I explain that they don't need to fully read the entire book but that they need to do their best to fully understand each aspect that they are looking for in order to present effectively to their classmates. We go over the rubric and I encourage them to start by familiarizing themselves with the questions, but I offer no other guidance then that. I then just sit back and watch them work. I love watching their brains start working!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7sxiwuesjLeTiMwCxGFntEYcBWC8NN880U-QeLhemggEZu2KMJsElV42kYKQ8itrHV5I1uDEZsese9C7yvNZcqy0xHT3Ie_6DVHvxwLaBZoFXU_1SAekQWR5bvWqGcEPk7cHaNS1sAUs/s1600/IMG_5905.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7sxiwuesjLeTiMwCxGFntEYcBWC8NN880U-QeLhemggEZu2KMJsElV42kYKQ8itrHV5I1uDEZsese9C7yvNZcqy0xHT3Ie_6DVHvxwLaBZoFXU_1SAekQWR5bvWqGcEPk7cHaNS1sAUs/s320/IMG_5905.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Typically, almost every single group begins by reading the book line by line. It's time consuming and can be pretty boring at first. Eventually, as all second graders do, they get squirmy. They start flipping through the book and suddenly see a picture of corn or clothes or something that could answer one of their questions. They start noticing the captions, diagrams, images, the table of contents and even the index!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvGMfwurNklGzl465E8YyLGjC9nEOAfh4ekOpgfDa4qSuRIU9zIWzToTRMwpIKJC8UuH5oFXZhwflZmYN6Lut3hqWR5B87FoXhlyX5idd492FsIOYNEZX1QzWvZRkETnD7w6y4Atrk8Dc/s1600/FullSizeRender-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvGMfwurNklGzl465E8YyLGjC9nEOAfh4ekOpgfDa4qSuRIU9zIWzToTRMwpIKJC8UuH5oFXZhwflZmYN6Lut3hqWR5B87FoXhlyX5idd492FsIOYNEZX1QzWvZRkETnD7w6y4Atrk8Dc/s320/FullSizeRender-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love when the first group discovers the index or the glossary! They usually lean over to another group and share what they learned! By searching for the answers within their books, my students don't only begin to discover the elements of nonfiction on their own but they also discover its use and importance! It becomes far more meaningful for them and they can likewise apply it much quicker to new and more difficult material later.<br />
<br />
At the end of the first day, we gather as a whole class and discuss what we learned and how we used our resources. Then begins my direct instruction. We talk about each element that we discovered and add it to a running list of parts of a nonfiction book that help a reader learn and understand. Each day during the project, we reference this list and add to it. After the first day, I walk around the classroom, helping the groups refer back to the list, so as to continue to find their answers!<br />
<br />
They then use their answers and what they've learned to write a script for their presentation and to create a poster to show their classmates. In year's past, we've then video taped their presentation on the iPad or have used the app, "Videolicious" to record their scripts and to display their posters.<br />
<br />
This year however, I decided to give my students even more choice and ownership over their project! I let them choose the apps or technology they wanted to use from a list of all the apps, we'd used so far this year. <br />
<br />
Most groups started with the most recent app we've been using, "Canvastic" to illustrate something they learned about their tribe. They then used various apps other apps to create a video or poster to go along with their presentation. Here are some of the short videos they created below! :)<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey everyone! I can't believe how fast the year is going! I blinked and October just flew! I probably should have been posting as it went, but with parent teacher conferences, progress reports, field trips, and school scheduled functions, I got a little behind. But I'm back and ready to do an October recap. Here are my top 5 favorite things we did last month! :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIE1ZlF5g11Du3klFWIcR-4LeMbLhLlYuzqBy3is-n30c8Tz6CdUMEgm_LiMRkE_8R23A15wUtqKeYpVAHcXYsKlVXBGcltCbN5iR-iXnU6mOFxL_nqF7PX7dWQnbIWL96NqwG8sFv8WM/s1600/Slide2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIE1ZlF5g11Du3klFWIcR-4LeMbLhLlYuzqBy3is-n30c8Tz6CdUMEgm_LiMRkE_8R23A15wUtqKeYpVAHcXYsKlVXBGcltCbN5iR-iXnU6mOFxL_nqF7PX7dWQnbIWL96NqwG8sFv8WM/s200/Slide2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: left;"><u>#1: Reading Comprehension and Story Development</u>: Below you can see my second graders holding up their Jack O'lanterns in front of one of my favorite October projects, "<a href="http://classwithcrowley.blogspot.com/search/label/Halloween">Our Halloween characters</a>!"</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlIULYSZPKdt_b6XIT5Dp0By1J5brDxdBXjCyOsHaKYmiZ0XQceE-o0BJBVqoE0TB3s80zucCSSQPehzcn8MaAV5dyhXA-i-_FKahgDhY_Y7dOU52ZnPBiGB9wMDThsHvyNuvEweuflpc/s1600/IMG_3193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlIULYSZPKdt_b6XIT5Dp0By1J5brDxdBXjCyOsHaKYmiZ0XQceE-o0BJBVqoE0TB3s80zucCSSQPehzcn8MaAV5dyhXA-i-_FKahgDhY_Y7dOU52ZnPBiGB9wMDThsHvyNuvEweuflpc/s640/IMG_3193.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How are cute are they!? I just love this picture! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During October, we worked a lot on the development of character. We read fun October stories, analyzed how characters are described, and how they can change as a story progresses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students created Halloween characters using paper, scissors, and glue. (no drawing or pencils allowed! Just cutting!) Then, they have to describe their character using proper organization and structure. We share them as a class and hang them on our Second grade writing wall! They each turn out so unique and different! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We talked about how her feelings towards pumpkins changed over the course of the story and we mapped out the evidence from the story that shows this change. </span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">We also wrote about what we would do with too many pumpkins and create Jack o'lanterns, just like Rebecca Estelle, to hang in the classroom windows for our Halloween Carnival.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>#2: Math Manipulatives</u>: This month we also used tons of fun manipulatives from the Dollar Store and Party City to make Math and 3 digit addition more exciting! 3 digit numbers are written on eyeballs, witch fingers, and gravestone cards to create engaging ways to compare, order, and add 3 digit numbers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjacT5u1PQYVTftk8_qlz4wC_q28X_cWB8kdxV6iDAdUQ5s1Uq0MpSrwQSiUKSo8zCLEiSqvSlDUSO2rCoNxTwl76Ek47-AFTPht2dgD7-spIZ2IzmGUuoP9Xf2VDoF9oGJ4dLm6vV4Izw/s1600/IMG_5513.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjacT5u1PQYVTftk8_qlz4wC_q28X_cWB8kdxV6iDAdUQ5s1Uq0MpSrwQSiUKSo8zCLEiSqvSlDUSO2rCoNxTwl76Ek47-AFTPht2dgD7-spIZ2IzmGUuoP9Xf2VDoF9oGJ4dLm6vV4Izw/s320/IMG_5513.JPG" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5aAqNqPZGHQGvXLj2v56giKq3chN7rTJy1B7mDf8-BKyebyJ5aEZTCk4CGVCen8ZTPAzo6uLvW5aps794cd4yEhdbhqbhBlPZi5QO7bVDmqUb7_jWkJ4b74xC0pGPsRfHSnevxRsi7lA/s1600/IMG_5693+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5aAqNqPZGHQGvXLj2v56giKq3chN7rTJy1B7mDf8-BKyebyJ5aEZTCk4CGVCen8ZTPAzo6uLvW5aps794cd4yEhdbhqbhBlPZi5QO7bVDmqUb7_jWkJ4b74xC0pGPsRfHSnevxRsi7lA/s320/IMG_5693+%25281%2529.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here you can see the kids using the eyeballs and grooves in our school benches to order the eyeballs from least to greatest. You can also see the kids using the witch fingers to add together on whiteboards and the gravestone addition problems in a fun Halloween cup to solve 3 digit addition with no regrouping. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Manipulatives make strengthening concepts that much easier! They are naturally more engaging and fun. There is so much you can do with them! Here are some other ways we used them this month! </span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<ul>
<li>We used the cards to play a scoot game to review 3 digit addition with no regrouping.</li>
<li>We used the eyeballs to practice greater than and less than symbols. </li>
<li>We used the witch fingers to practice adding more than two addends.</li>
<li>We hid the eyeballs around the classroom and went on a scavenger hunt to create Math problems. </li>
<li>We even combined the app, Doceri, to create instructional videos using our manipulatives to explain how to solve 3 digit addition problems.</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here you can see the eyeballs being used to compare and order numbers at a Math station! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>#3. Quotation Marks with Candy Corn:</u> What is one of the most exciting parts about Halloween? Well... the candy of course. In October as part of our study on characters, we learn about dialogue and use candy corn to learn about quotation marks! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwUbSsc1E1YXw654eO-PBUL5b3xktZeVJavkv9yhBexBExWI2WbHWeBQrX0aQIwS1ukMfsUfKENGQ9tx7ttenAKjo-b9QrnZwuF-ifm-Oze1lUayGa04jymgQ5Fuz7oJSn1CMxz3QxOs0/s1600/FullSizeRender-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwUbSsc1E1YXw654eO-PBUL5b3xktZeVJavkv9yhBexBExWI2WbHWeBQrX0aQIwS1ukMfsUfKENGQ9tx7ttenAKjo-b9QrnZwuF-ifm-Oze1lUayGa04jymgQ5Fuz7oJSn1CMxz3QxOs0/s320/FullSizeRender-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students pick a scary Halloween character to say something. We write our sentences on strips and glue the candy down. We then create silly stories about visiting a Haunted House. In the story, Halloween characters talk to the author. We focus on the importance of differentiating what words we use, so as to make our story more interesting. You can find this activity <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Quotations-938603">here</a> if you want to try it next year with your kiddos! </div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikzbidpSsGg76Ymn5lCFa1c-1JYrcjwM9jQ9IyGqpKzfeJsY5e0poxL0dUG9TrNLHK4S5sA22rcRCJzgjcY24uFjVe-I1QsouNu78dzF7VcKnUY_yrsD90uxBN7fhwppuVMGHHACQ15w0/s1600/Slide5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikzbidpSsGg76Ymn5lCFa1c-1JYrcjwM9jQ9IyGqpKzfeJsY5e0poxL0dUG9TrNLHK4S5sA22rcRCJzgjcY24uFjVe-I1QsouNu78dzF7VcKnUY_yrsD90uxBN7fhwppuVMGHHACQ15w0/s200/Slide5.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#<u>4 Halloween Technology:</u> As a Blended Learning teacher, I am constantly trying to use technology in the classroom with my kiddos to help transform their learning, build deeper connections, and apply their understanding. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">During October, we used <u>Doodle Buddy</u> Stamps to help solve Halloween Word Problems. Below is a video I took of two of my students solving a repeated addition problem about spiders and their webs. You can see how they used the stamps to create a visualization of their thought process. They then created their own word problems! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dx3_ik7pYjwKBLQgvmK6b1V6tqI9RencfGR29bVS6klu84unErzPG6dxZahTNv0Kcw9OiVqHcQtZQX9syRU_w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an example of one of the problems they created! </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3fM_b33Xk9H76K4_MwwCaYxfGoTdKbeATVK9aJXN-UdiOn4QPMJuUpCgYKpEAPJqXVCjbrHMSsT2meqkcQXbF6KjxNHWRwcv5D24b8ghyALidLoEnB-ruGHhBY7F8Ul7FoK0CD61SxYg/s1600/Photo+Oct+19%252C+12+21+36+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3fM_b33Xk9H76K4_MwwCaYxfGoTdKbeATVK9aJXN-UdiOn4QPMJuUpCgYKpEAPJqXVCjbrHMSsT2meqkcQXbF6KjxNHWRwcv5D24b8ghyALidLoEnB-ruGHhBY7F8Ul7FoK0CD61SxYg/s320/Photo+Oct+19%252C+12+21+36+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also used the app, Chatterpix, to create Monster stories that outline what a Monster likes to do on Halloween. Students used clay to create silly monsters. They then wrote a script from their monster's perspective and used chatterpix to make them talk. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dy4TY4hGYSz-KgAh5z8ClI_gXHIC3iFTe8EF_NuePEmm1bU8-7Hf2QetS3viI5NMUqz1J9RcemUMKA3emsj1A' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We likewise used another app called Pic Collage, to create collages that show some of the fun Halloween stuff we did in class in October! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<u>#5 Dress up</u>: Ok, so the last and final favorite for the month isn't so much a classroom activity but I loved it anyways! My primary staff dressed up as Jurassic Park for Halloween! Some of us dressed as escaped dinosaurs, while others dressed as the tourists being chased! I just love Halloween! We had such an awesome time! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have you ever had one of those days, where your lesson plans fail majorly and then you wing it and end up with something crazier and way better then you ever imagined!!!?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I both LOVE and HATE when that happens.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These past few weeks, my students have been studying Maps in Social Studies. Now each year, I like to mix up my activities and projects just a little, so as to keep my instruction fun and to meet the needs of the current class I have. But at the same time I don't recreate the wheel, I DO of course stick to some of those trusty lessons that always work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately this past week, one of my trusty lessons didn't work as well as I expected it to. My students blew through the material and I suddenly had 27 pairs of eyes staring at me with over 45 minutes of now what next!? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since we were studying the characteristics and parts of a Map, I thought ok well they can create maps in groups for the next 45 minutes. I gave them paper and modeled how to draw roads, symbols, a map key, a map scale and a compass. My intention was for them to finish up within those 45 minutes but they LOVED it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiJyljqBVbNxImv3g2mkv1PLOkExAGwhjVmJWvXES_CdGfPh31QUJtHVXU6ZauxQvL11aA6JGTOT9Yc56vUwRThJQ-ZDQwitv0lni6olg-b6JedRLs0CWtMlFKIuavJhaClTwagTfSPA0/s1600/IMG_3062.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiJyljqBVbNxImv3g2mkv1PLOkExAGwhjVmJWvXES_CdGfPh31QUJtHVXU6ZauxQvL11aA6JGTOT9Yc56vUwRThJQ-ZDQwitv0lni6olg-b6JedRLs0CWtMlFKIuavJhaClTwagTfSPA0/s320/IMG_3062.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They took it to a whole new level and designed towns with themes. They planned out what they wanted in their towns and discussed whether or not it was ok to have more than one ice cream store or football stadium. They took out rulers and analyzed how long they would want to drive to get from one location on their map to another to help determine their map scale. I even overheard one group discussing where to put their own house on the map, finally determining that it should be on the north side of the map because its closer for Santa to reach at Christmas. It was incredible thinking skills!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A 45 minute map activity, turned into a 3 day project, one where they were digging into the material and thinking more critically than I had ever intended. We even added that Tech Twist by presenting our projects through the use of one of my favorite apps, "Shadow puppet!" You can see two of their presentations below. </div>

They worked so hard and I was so proud of their finished projects!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously I'm going to keep planning out my lessons. I'm way too OCD to wing it everyday but its definitely nice to remind myself that sometimes a great lesson can come from a last minute thought! :) </div>

<br />
Happy Tech Tuesday! I thought I would share this super cool app that one of the parents in class introduced to me recently. Color Splash! Use the app to take and make black and white photos with pops of color! How totally fun and awesome is that!!?<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">

She then used the app to highlight only the apple. She mounted them on black card stock and we sent them home as a fun fall keepsake for each parent to keep! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>

I wish you could see how adorable the ones of my students turned out! They looked so cute with their little apples! The contrast the color creates with the black and white is such a fun and exciting effect. After watching her use it, I tried it out myself and found it extremely easy to use! The wheels in my head are already spinning for how I can use this app in class this year! So many ideas! Can't wait to try them all out! :) </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week in honor of Pope Francis and his visit to the United States, we've gone pope crazy! We've been projecting him onto our whiteboard and watching him live all week! On Tuesday, we cheered when he landed in D.C. and watched him meet and shake hands with President Obama.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then read about his trip to the states, from an amazing freebie provided by <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/A-Catholic-Look-Pope-Francis-Visits-the-USA-2096497">Catholic Cutie</a>. We answered fun discussion questions about where they would want to take the pope, and how we can listen to his message and make the world a better place. I loved looking at all the responses my students came up with. One little boy wanted to show him our classroom, while another thought the pope might like to go to Hawaii and relax! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Yesterday, we watched part of the canonization mass of Saint Junipero Serra and created a fun directed drawing of the pope. Here you can see a simple video of me drawing it step by step! I obviously went much MUCH slower with my kiddos. </div>

Today, we also learned some fun interesting facts about the pope (Did you know he used to own a Harley-Davidsons!? and that he once was a bouncer in a bar!?), while creating cute little pope puppets from <a href="http://www.catholicicing.com/pope-francis-craft/">Catholic Icing</a>!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My students absolutely loved them. They kept him on their desks all day and talked to him, while they worked. I wish I could have posted a picture of them "buddy reading" with Pope Francis! But here you can see the Pope hanging out with them, while they worked on ST Math during Math rotations today instead! </div>

Tomorrow, we're going to end our wonderful week with Pope Francis by watching him visit schools in New York! We're also going to do a fun interactive project with our classroom iPads, where students will receive a Pope Francis quote and use their iPads to record what they think that quote means and how we can use that quote to help ourselves grow both in our faith and our relationships with others. I can't wait! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hey everyone! As we roll into week four, I am excited to share with you my newly improved Second Grade classroom! After two years with the same bulletin boards and colors in my room, I decided I needed some change! I started by pulling out our school ladder and began by attacking my giant bulletin board. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At my school, I am blessed with super tall ceilings. They make my classroom feel extremely large and the windows let in awesome natural light. The downside is that one of my bulletin boards is colossal! As you can see in the picture on the left, I have to use a 20 foot ladder to reach the top! Now if you've never done it before, trying to hold paper just right while you staple it and balance on a very tall ladder is absolutely terrifying!! So as you can imagine... I don't get the ladder out all that often. ;) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTvURrwcSHO-2J5b_g15VR2mcUvNnjSeReRl9xlHAb6r-pKl5s-e95sgdPkJDm2gBDeE7Q2HY0DpqtOxJDWD_D27KbqUzrXaRp6JEH_ASgqjo5rOZgo_enw9SbUvuz6-6h0L2w_9OrYTg/s1600/IMG_2614.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTvURrwcSHO-2J5b_g15VR2mcUvNnjSeReRl9xlHAb6r-pKl5s-e95sgdPkJDm2gBDeE7Q2HY0DpqtOxJDWD_D27KbqUzrXaRp6JEH_ASgqjo5rOZgo_enw9SbUvuz6-6h0L2w_9OrYTg/s200/IMG_2614.JPG" width="200" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguMiAfuR5i9r5FAu_5HdbNMSf9onNlCCOE1ZXRYsTR0HoC22Z1RIVdOZbKOI-X3azgXUASkzb38hzfqGuhmyzIdBGSpSm3l9YwZs_K7xX0PujXvmqyieQiEk23V9aQZUOgFA7W-AN6Pjg/s1600/IMG_2612.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguMiAfuR5i9r5FAu_5HdbNMSf9onNlCCOE1ZXRYsTR0HoC22Z1RIVdOZbKOI-X3azgXUASkzb38hzfqGuhmyzIdBGSpSm3l9YwZs_K7xX0PujXvmqyieQiEk23V9aQZUOgFA7W-AN6Pjg/s200/IMG_2612.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But unfortunately this summer... it couldn't be avoided. Although I wanted to keep my school's Mission Tree and my Last Supper board, the paper behind them was beginning to fade. So, I had to pull down the entire board and redo it. In the process, I decided to shorten the tree and condense the Last Supper, so that it would allow for me to move my Writing wall to this side of the classroom. It took me way longer than I expected, but I think it looks awesome with all their work on it! Here, you can see their "Can you Guess the Second Grader?" projects for Back to School night. </div>

Here's a close up of it! I ended up adding my students' names to the soccer balls! The soccer girl in the bulletin board is actually my sister! She's played soccer all her life and currently plays in college. I thought it would be a fun touch! Little did I know though, that my brother would be disappointed that he wasn't included! lol! </div>

My brother played basketball in college, so I created a basketball themed board above my small group reading table that includes reading posters from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Reading-Strategy-Poster-1846073">Kelly Knighton</a>'s tpt store! I'm going to change the posters on this board throughout the year to represent strategies that we will be working on in class.</div>

In this picture below, you can see my view when looking from my reading groups table. I love my little kidney table because it allows for me to see everything! You can see my classroom door, and our classroom cabinets, as well as my back table and every student desk in the room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVrlybKrNAsAQFcaUScRXic1eTQQm31wjCfYL5WEZucYGGmBZdKXSoqRw4oMNnEijitMJr-JlpSlTSr7N0i20Not5OhdgBugEkovPcqSIk5AKnnpCSMyPHpuCR7fhyav3UzHTm-yGuU6M/s1600/IMG_2963.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVrlybKrNAsAQFcaUScRXic1eTQQm31wjCfYL5WEZucYGGmBZdKXSoqRw4oMNnEijitMJr-JlpSlTSr7N0i20Not5OhdgBugEkovPcqSIk5AKnnpCSMyPHpuCR7fhyav3UzHTm-yGuU6M/s640/IMG_2963.jpg" width="640" /></a></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
On the cabinets is where I hang more student work! Each student makes an "I am poem" during the first two weeks of school. I type them up and add their first day of school picture to them. We laminate them and keep them on the cabinets all year long. Next to their poem is where I hang some of their new work each month! I also hang work on the front cabinets and in the windows of our classroom!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last but not least... you can see what the front of my classroom looks like. I've divided my whiteboard into three sections. The first is where I keep the "I can" or focused objective that we're currently working on, the date, our progress in ST Math and my reading groups. The second section is used as just a typical white board or can using an apple tv be projected on. And the third section is our Long Term Target board. I write our long term objective for each subject, so that students can see what we're working towards. We reflect on how our learning is progressing and what else we need to do to achieve such mastery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, if you look above the board, you are able see one of my favorite additions to my classroom, the vinyl quote of the year! Our school wide theme is "Trust in the Lord with all your heart." I learned how to use my cricut this summer and was extremely excited to make this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So yes! Sorry about the long post! But I hope you enjoyed getting a sneak peek into my room! I'm looking forward to posting more photos throughout the year of the work we create and the learning and fun that we have! </div>

I was excited to see how quickly my new class jumped into the classroom procedures and routines. They're just the cutest little things! I can't wait to watch them learn and grow this year! :)<br />
<br />
As I'm still pulling together pictures from my first week and half, I thought I would share the little gifts I pulled together for some of my new coworkers, many of whom are first time teachers!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilsEudXZeGtrxJMeaqCPDGRHeVw2tQutB46DFCiRSS6k3qTFXtG8E3s63X0o-S-G0NON8SirRaS_bUvR9eMhzz0tfCRlH6nP7Vh9u4L1N78pitUx8_OpVi9y6Dr5g5_g9wikLyy6haNWI/s1600/IMG_5179.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilsEudXZeGtrxJMeaqCPDGRHeVw2tQutB46DFCiRSS6k3qTFXtG8E3s63X0o-S-G0NON8SirRaS_bUvR9eMhzz0tfCRlH6nP7Vh9u4L1N78pitUx8_OpVi9y6Dr5g5_g9wikLyy6haNWI/s200/IMG_5179.JPG" width="200" /></a>In the picture on the left, you will see some simple mason jars purchased in the dollar aisle of Walgreens! I filled them with emergency chocolate, magnets, safety pins, erasers, paper clips and gum. I then attached a cute pencil magnet I found at the Dollar Tree with a rubber band!<br />
<br />
In front of the mason jars is an adorable pencil case that I found at Safeway and filled with emergency chocolate for my aide! I got a little cheesy with the tag. ;)<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgkoP7nsxm68Mfo-fOCXYw-EX3qcgDSb_k_86N1dn9jmcnRqx5pYU7Eivnp1LXO8V1aZqe7_0kwymkN7lVMdOe2oWRE2rPqialQ-jEpaoFI_vLNyxfPAAsEU4NKMUcTKHNubXlHc86kdM/s1600/IMG_5180.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgkoP7nsxm68Mfo-fOCXYw-EX3qcgDSb_k_86N1dn9jmcnRqx5pYU7Eivnp1LXO8V1aZqe7_0kwymkN7lVMdOe2oWRE2rPqialQ-jEpaoFI_vLNyxfPAAsEU4NKMUcTKHNubXlHc86kdM/s200/IMG_5180.JPG" width="200" /></a><br />
Finally in the picture on the right, you will see my silly "Sea" basket that I created for a new coworker who's starting her first year and has an ocean themed classroom! It too is filled with fun new teacher items and even some cool anchor duck tape that I found at Safeway!<br />
<br />
I had so much fun making these little gifts and am beyond excited to be working with such amazing and wonderful people! It's going to be a great year!<br />

As we get closer and closer to the first day of school, I'm spending more and more time in my classroom. I've run countless errands and have been busy setting up the room. I've mapped out my year's curriculum, updated my classroom handbook and redone many of bulletin boards. With school starting next week... I'm excited to say... that I'm almost done!!! Whoot! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today, I was excited to have finished my Welcome Back to School Bulletin Board! Each year I pick a silly pun and create a classroom bulletin board that welcomes my students into Second grade. Last year, I created a crayon bulletin board. We left it up all year long, and they got to keep the crayon with their name on it when the school year was over! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This year, I decided to celebrate one of my loves, Soccer! With the </span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">U.S. Women's team recently winning the World Cup, I thought it would be a fun board to welcome my new class of kiddos. It took me a long time to get the goal just right, but I think it turned out cute! </span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My plan is to add my students' names on the soccer balls once I have a completed class list! How is your classroom coming along?! I'm looking forward to showing you my finished classroom when its all done!! </div>

Who else is as uncontrollably excited as I am that Dr. Seuss' new book was finally published and came out in book stores this week!!?!?<br />
<br />
As an avid Dr. Seuss fan, who owns every single one of his books, I had to have a copy for my classroom. "What Pet should I Get?" is an adorable book about two little kids who go to the pet store to purchase a new pet. They are immediately confronted by tons of amazing pets and they struggle to decide on one to buy. Upon reading it, I fell absolutely in Love! It's a perfect classroom read aloud, with easy words, wonderful rhyme and fabulous pictures.<br />
<br />
And who don't love talking about pets!?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm already planning on using it this year as my initial introduction to my students' writing. Each year, I love starting off with a writing prompt that my students are excited about; one that I can use as an assessment as to their true writing potential and present ability. When kids are excited about what they are writing, they tend to write more and therefore challenge themselves to do their best. This book is going to be great for getting their minds flowing and encouraging them to write! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put together a small companion pack of pages to go along with the book. You can download it <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/What-Pet-Should-I-get-1999155">here</a> for free! I hope that you will enjoy the book as much as me! </div>

I hope you're summer is going great! I am excited to say that summer school ended this past Friday and I am thoroughly enjoying my time off! My brother is in town for the week and we're having tons of fun as a family! Tomorrow we're going to the beach!<br />
<br />
However, this week I also began tackling my classroom. Although I have a few weeks left of summer, the urge to get started and the feeling that I won't be ready in time is already beginning! :)<br />
<br />
So what did I do? Got started of course!<br />
<br />
Some of my bulletin boards on the top of my giant wall were beginning to fade, so out came the 20 foot ladder! I also decided at the end of the school year that I was going to move my writing wall to the other side, so that I could hang their work without climbing on our counters. I thought moving it would be a piece of cake, but boy was I wrong! 8 exhausting hours later... lol Here's what I have so far...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioeF0VXZo6AFKjt0colYY1gTqjBJ4joqGIOCS0qIcX0lLCTkPzrG_hyphenhyphenlHK_14WkV7ge-gqlkysVyC8_4pohYHzM7JQxdpgYeuJnmABcECrfpCGWEDCn440P7URJpi7NpP3iFBgorJUimM/s1600/IMG_5016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioeF0VXZo6AFKjt0colYY1gTqjBJ4joqGIOCS0qIcX0lLCTkPzrG_hyphenhyphenlHK_14WkV7ge-gqlkysVyC8_4pohYHzM7JQxdpgYeuJnmABcECrfpCGWEDCn440P7URJpi7NpP3iFBgorJUimM/s400/IMG_5016.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I still need to finish the birthday board in purple and do the entire other side of the room! But we're making progress! And I'm totally in love with the lime green paper. It makes the whole wall pop! Can't wait to see what it looks like with student work! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Today in Summer school, we played a little place value battleship! Students used Lakeshore Privacy Partitions to secretly hide their game boards. We used two 120 charts, some Target Dollar Spot erasers and some fun colorful beads to create a Place Value Review game. Students started by setting up their game boards. They used the white chart to hide their "ships." They covered 5 numbers on their board with their erasers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTq4vCW1Npo-vslSurv_JKR3h0jGxmleKclModdHQbMXZAA3a5jbFOarYemW8Uw1guvWuqcT_l3-CVuvyS46KL359DfzXU3oeqiGS1JKpco8rcSn5jIIQYPOjrVEBgM8PdSfTNBte77WQ/s1600/Slide3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTq4vCW1Npo-vslSurv_JKR3h0jGxmleKclModdHQbMXZAA3a5jbFOarYemW8Uw1guvWuqcT_l3-CVuvyS46KL359DfzXU3oeqiGS1JKpco8rcSn5jIIQYPOjrVEBgM8PdSfTNBte77WQ/s400/Slide3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rather than asking A16, or B7 to describe where you are hoping to sink a partner's ship, students asked by using place value clues. They would say 7 tens and 5 ones to describe 75. They would then record where they had asked on their gold chart by using a colorful bead. If they guessed a space with an eraser, they collected the eraser. The first person to collect all their partner's erasers won! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For added Differentiation my higher students were paired together and encouraged to ask their partner by saying, "10 more than 7 tens and 5 ones" or "5 less than 7 tens and 7 ones." My higher students loved the challenge it added. </div>

Overall, the game was a big hit! We're definitely going to have to play it in the school year too! </div>

I can't believe that it is already Summer! Like all teachers know... it was such a whirlwind of emotions during our last week. I was up and down and all over the place. Everything happened SO fast and just like that it was all over. I am super sad to lose all the kids in my class this year, but I know they're going to do great in third and I'm looking forward to a great new class of kiddos in the fall... Oh and summer of course!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
SUMMER!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far... I've been enjoying sleeping in, reading and catching up on some of my favorite shows. I've gone to the pool, and gotten my nails done! It was a much needed break. Next week... I'll start Summer school, but I'm looking forward to a few more weeks of summer after that! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But if you're wondering how my crazy last week went, then you're in luck! Here is the schedule below! :) </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipy_LS-uVy2PIWgb0JaXQTyJUZRKv2PKloq8VC8YvkBBpivtACmSaDZTMRHgZHxv2nM-4VEEdoMYqse-LWfcNlSLTbSiPsPe4eukhGKQUexofKvMJm_ql3X209iByvEs2HFcjF52f_qF4/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipy_LS-uVy2PIWgb0JaXQTyJUZRKv2PKloq8VC8YvkBBpivtACmSaDZTMRHgZHxv2nM-4VEEdoMYqse-LWfcNlSLTbSiPsPe4eukhGKQUexofKvMJm_ql3X209iByvEs2HFcjF52f_qF4/s400/Slide1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Monday</u></b>: We performed our Fractured Fairy Tale plays, and shared our Fractured fairy tale stories with the Kindergarten. It was a great end to our Fairy Tale unit. More to come on that later. ;) </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Tuesday</u></b>: We had our end of the year Jiji party!! I was so proud of my class! Our class average made it all the way to 98% in ST MATH! So to celebrate we got free time to play and use any of the academic games in the classroom or on the iPad for one whole hour! It was a perfect time for me to pull down some of those bulletin boards and organize some of the drawers in my classroom that may or may not have gotten crazy during the year. A few of my girls even helped me! One little girl actually sat for 15 minutes picking out those little crayon papers out of our crayon bucket! I don't know about you, but those pieces drive me crazy. She was so sweet. It was great! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Wednesday</u></b>: Wednesday was our school's grubby day. We started by visiting our 5th grade buddies and saying goodbye to them. Below you can see the buddy cards we made them. Then we got a special end of the year cupcake treat. You gotta love the adorableness of Pinterest. I found these cute sun cupcakes and teddy gram beach cupcakes the night before and I don't know if I was on an end of the year adrenaline kick or what, but I just couldn't resist making a quick trip to the store for supplies. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After eating the cupcakes, we had one more grubby day surprise before we had to get to work cleaning. We played with shaving cream! We wrote some of our favorite second grade memories in shaving cream! We practiced our cursive and we wrote silly notes to our classmates. It was so much fun! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we cleaned out our desks, clorox wiped the entire classroom and moved all the desks and boxes to the side. It was a great grubby day! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Thursday</u></b>: On Thursday, we had our school's field day. We played tons of games and enjoyed the beautiful sun outside! I got to kick back and enjoy my students, while the 7th graders ran the entire thing! What a fun day! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Friday</u></b>: On our last day together, we started the day off by reading one of my favorite end of the year books, "Last Day Blues" by Julie Danneberg. I gave my students their end of the year gifts and we went to a beautiful school wide Mass run by the first graders. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After mass, we did my favorite end of the year activity. I've done it now for the last few years and its a great way to look back on what we've learned throughout the year. We call it our end of the year Learning Wall<i>.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I split the kids into groups and hand them post it notes. Each group is responsible for a different subject. Red was Math, and Pink was Language Arts. Blue/ Teal was Social Studies, the Orange was Religion and the Yellow was Science. The Purple was for other things we learned like being kind to our classmates, and challenging ourselves everyday to make ourselves the best we can be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I set a timer and we list what we learned this year on as many post it notes as we can in 20 minutes. It's absolute CHAOS! But like the GOOD kind of chaos. The kind we're they're so excited and they're screaming at the top of their lungs because they're remembering things and talking about it with each other. They're writing as quickly as they can, and running to the board, while I stand on a chair and frantically stick them to the front board in our classroom. If you're trying to picture my classroom as this time, I promise we looked ridiculous! My principal even came in this year in during chaos and just laughed and joined in by cheering us on as we worked. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the Chaos is worth it!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuKvDMoyqa-63WUn0Kv8wjNFcr-GhLtgNSu8EW89bK-gv2vwQES5Z62O7HnKLHv4UCOBnbA40tg3gUUnq5yhkYjV9nZ2KfOyYDGuluB53BjYal5-2J5_gl8wuk4RAZVMggtQMq8yqjik4/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuKvDMoyqa-63WUn0Kv8wjNFcr-GhLtgNSu8EW89bK-gv2vwQES5Z62O7HnKLHv4UCOBnbA40tg3gUUnq5yhkYjV9nZ2KfOyYDGuluB53BjYal5-2J5_gl8wuk4RAZVMggtQMq8yqjik4/s640/Slide1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The end result is this amazing visual representation of our year... this incredible board where they can see how their brains have grown in the last 10 months and how hard they've worked to get where they are. You should see how proud they are of themselves. It's just awesome. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not gonna lie... I get pretty excited to see everything I've taught them during the year too! Often times as teachers, we work so hard during the year that we forget to take the time to sit back and reflect on what we've done. Thank goodness we have some time during summer to do that! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bring on the reflection! :) </div>

Across California, regulations have been put in place to help conserve water during our current drought. I was extremely surprised to find that many of my students were not only unaware that we were in the middle of a drought, but were also confused as to what that meant and how we might conserve water. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A friend of mine from another school shared her easy reader nonfiction article on the drought with us and we began our short study on the California drought and its effect on our state. We watched news segments on the drought and read about water conservation on the internet. We even looked at before and after images of lakes and rivers near ur in California. Below I've posted one of the amazing final products from our study. Students in groups each created a "Shadow Puppet" video informing people about the drought. "Shadow puppet" is one of my new favorite apps to use and I think it worked great for this project! </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the last few weeks, we've been working with shapes! Now I'll admit, teaching 2D and 3D shapes was one of those concepts that used to be somewhat tricky for me. I felt like I was one of those beginning teachers, that unfortunately didn't know what else to do except encourage my students to memorize the different shapes. I'd hold up a shape and say, "So this is a triangle. Got it?" and hope to God that they did get it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have any manipulatives or games, direct instruction or even activities that made learning shapes easier or more enjoyable. I just hoped that my students would catch on eventually. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I still don't have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to shapes, but I'm definitely doing better! I've found some incredible resources and have blog stalked many amazing teachers out there in the world and have borrowed some great ideas from them and come up with a few on my own. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>Here are some of the things I use now!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. <u><b>Geoboards</b></u>: Who doesn't love rubber bands and little peg boards? My kids love love love the geoboards. I use them a lot in center work. I pair them with index cards that guide my students as to what shapes they need to create, so as to keep them focused and on task. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. <b><u>Kinesthetic shape making</u></b>: We go out to the grassy ground next to the playground and create different shapes using our bodies. We work in groups to create sides and angles. We take pictures by climbing to the top of the playground and using our iPad to snap aerial views. We then use doodle buddy or a drawing app on the iPad to label the sides, angles and vertices of the shapes we made in our pictures. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. <b><u>Shape manipulatives</u></b>: I printed these amazing pattern block templates from Jessica's Corner of Cyberspace and paired them with my shape blocks for a fun center. I created a name that shape graphic organizer to record their work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I'm so glad that I've learned a few tricks. Not only do my students enjoy shapes more, but I definitely enjoy teaching them more too! What are some ways that you teach shapes? </div>

I thought I would start off by telling you about our amazing PBL (project based learning) project that we recently finished on Presidents! Below you can see the silly presidents we created during our research portion of the project!! Aren't they adorable! We started the PBL project with anchor videos from Brainpop about Lincoln and George Washington for presidents day! I absolutely love using brain pop videos in my classroom and my students seem to love them too.<br />
<br />
We then discussed our PBL guiding questions: What is a President? and How have past presidents influenced our country today?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYIE3NmVuM3w9ZOcvL8aMzlObDm9LLm5VHdaY-wJ-bRQTJbp29Sh3fJE_mK4NIFNq5RO99WpbZDq2iiDHG14kkmCPcnqPDrMmL4v-wQVm1o50SwNvd9-_VaHQjulFcagu-dg9UcBiezE/s1600/Photo+Apr+09-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYIE3NmVuM3w9ZOcvL8aMzlObDm9LLm5VHdaY-wJ-bRQTJbp29Sh3fJE_mK4NIFNq5RO99WpbZDq2iiDHG14kkmCPcnqPDrMmL4v-wQVm1o50SwNvd9-_VaHQjulFcagu-dg9UcBiezE/s1600/Photo+Apr+09-2.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
We then meet in groups to brainstorm and plan out how we could find out the answers to these questions. Students in groups used the brainpop app to research what a president is, and to learn about their duties and responsibilities to our country. They took notes and we discussed their findings as a class. Students then chose presidents to research and used various iPad apps to look up important information about their president. I've included a list of some of the apps we used in class! Some of them we used for research on our president, while others were trivia and games that my students used for enrichment fun once they were done with various aspects of their work throughout the project.<br />

They were given a simple graphic organizer to fill out while they searched, so as to gain a more informed understanding of the life of their president. They edited their graphic organizer and created these presidents below to share their research with their classmates and our school community!<br />

The next step of our presidential PBL project was to look into using their writing skills and technology to publish their learning. Students used the below rubric to write a presidential "autobiography" paragraph as if they were the president that they learned about. The rubric is available <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/President-paragraph-Rubric-1805222">here</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Finally, to culminate our project. Students picked their favorite sentences in their paragraph and we recorded their voices, reading their facts using the app, Funny Movie Maker. They used an image of their president from the internet and made it look as if their president was speaking. They turned out great! I strung them together using iMovie to create the below video. I know that my kids loved working on this project!</span></td></tr>

I've been busy adjusting to a brand new school and taking on tons of after school tutoring hours. I've also been working on transferring my Indiana Credential to a California Credential and have been taking Blended Learning and Project Based Learning classes at Santa Clara University. I am excited to show you what I've learned and done over the past year!<br />

One of the best parts about being an elementary teacher is having the chance to celebrate the 100th day of school! As a great way to practice place value, it can also be a great spark to practice writing, parts of speech and communication. Below you can see some of the fun classroom activities we did for the 100th day of school. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, students walked into the room with a special surprise on their desk! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A 100th day of school breakfast treat and a 100th day of school sticker from Lakeshore.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then students worked on their 100th day morning book, writing down answers to some silly questions. Here was one of favorites:</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>100 of what would make your teacher go crazy?</i></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>-One hundred kids following her and not sitting in their seats would make my teacher go crazy!</i></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During our Math rotations, one of the classroom stations worked on counting money. Students had to create 100 cents in as many ways as possible. In another station they worked in partners on answering tough 100th day of school word problems. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During Reading Rotations, one of the stations works on a parts of speech booklet. They had to write 100 different words in ten different categories including proper nouns, common nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, singular nouns, plural nouns and many more. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After recess we went on a 100th day of school scavenger hunt. I hid 100 hershey kisses in the classroom. Each hershey kiss had a mini label with a number on it. When a kiss was found, the number was placed on our number chart. We found all of the hershey kisses except tricky number 47, which we found a week later in the bookcase. </div>

Finally we did a special writing project. Students had to write about what they are going to do when they are 100 years old. Using detailed sentences they had to paint a picture in their reader's minds. Once they finished their writing, they could create a little old person to go with their project. I think they turned out really cute.<br />

It turned out to be a great day! We had so much fun and the kids learned a ton! They started calling it surprise learning because they had no idea that they were learning!Meaghan Crowley-Sullivanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06930797272780694209noreply@blogger.com0
